Is There Something Wrong With Me If I’m Depressed? How Can I Stop Feeling Like This?

Well, first let me start by saying there is nothing wrong with you if you are depressed.  Any mental health issue can be addressed with proper help.  Similarly to when your body is feeling ill, mental health issues (such as depression, anxiety, etc) are signs that your mind is feeling ill.

There is a difference between depression and feelings of sadness.  The following are a few signs of depression:
  • Feelings of sadness
  • Sleeping more or less
  • Eating more or less
  • Irritability
  • Lack of concentration
  • Thoughts of suicide (seek immediate help)
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest
If there are feelings of sadness, some great ways of feeling better:
  • Acknowledge your feelings (ignoring them will only cause them to linger longer)
  • Speak to someone you trust
  • Journal your feelings
  • Listen to music you like
  • Spend time with friends
You may come up with your own list of “feel good” activities that are healthy.
If at anytime your feelings of sadness escalate to depression, your best course of action is to seek professional help with a therapist.  This will allow a professional to assess your symptoms and help you with strategies that can guide you towards feeling better.
Hope this helps,
